The Bannock Awareness recipe book is a collection of favourite bannock related recipes (with a few others) and of little known facts about First Nations history and culture. In precontact times, bannock was made from natural substances gathered from the woods: flour from roots, natural levening agents and a sweet syrupmade from the sap of trees.   Best Picture Book is Shanyaak'utlaax: Salmon Boy (), published by the Sealaska Heritage Institute. The book is edited by Tlingit speakers Johnny Marks, Hans Chester, David Katzeek, and Nora Dauenhauer and Tlingit linguist Richard Dauenhauer and illustrated by Michaela Goade. (Please see "A Watery World" -- an interview of illustrator, Goade.).

The book looks at food throughout the ages, the development of food branding, the culture of celebrity chefs and the stylization of the cookbook. The book is split into sections which explore the culinary traditions from Italy, France, Spain and the USA, with vibrant food photography and illustrations depicting cooking methods, celebrated. Product Description: Written and illustrated by members of the Tahltan and Cree nations, this sweet, simple story looks at a very special relationship. A young boy goes for a walk with his kohkom, or grandmother, listening, picking, praying, eating, just as she does. In doing so, he begins to learn the rich cultural traditions and values of his.

In her introduction, Silvey asserts that "Children's Books change lives. [This book] provides insight into how they do this." The organization suggests how books have touched people (e.g. in career later choice or developing a deeper understanding). An excerpt, a bit of background, and the cover of each book discussed are included with each essay. Tahltan of the Skitine Plateau, Bella Coola, and Micmac of Richibucto also trapped lynx for its fur [46, 47, 49]. The Tahltan used the hide to make clothing such as robes and headgear [46]. In addition to consuming lynx, the Nicola of interior British Columbia used the animal as bait when hunting other animals such as deer and mountain sheep [31].
